There’s nothing more simply indulgent than shutting the world out in a warm water cocoon—particularly in the winter, when a steamy bath is the perfect escape from the season’s icy grip. Of course, the concept only gets better when you take it to these eight hotels, where baths are so considered, and the tubs so beautiful, the activity almost takes on the grandeur of an ancient ritual. The only challenging part becomes deciding when it’s time to get out.
Capella Ubud
Leave it to renowned architect Bill Bensley to elevate the Bali experience to unimaginable highs at this resort in Ubud. Inspired by the layered aesthetic of the Spice Trade routes of the 18th century, this nearly 10-acre sprawl of lushness and style leaves something to be discovered at every turn—including the bathtubs. The 22 tented camps and the two-bedroom lodge are all outfitted with stunning hand-hammered copper tubs, which each took about 100 hours to make.

This two-year-old farmhouse-style hotel in Portugal’s Alentejo region recently added the 915-square-foot Farmer’s House to its inventory of mid-century-inspired casas. There’s plenty to take note of, from wood-spindled windows reminiscent of Vietnamese temples to hanging mirrors in the silhouette of Hoi An lanterns. This 367-room luxury hotel—one of our favorites in Vancouver—offers countless types of indulgent bathtubs, but the most special just might be the Japanese Ofuro Tub that’s tucked into some of its signature room, many of which also come with harbor and mountain views. This deep-soaking, marble-cloaked square tub is built with jets, a bench, and a ledge where you can comfortably rest a bottle of British Columbia wine.
